
Let’s talk about 550mm Halogen Heating
If you’re tired of waiting around for a convection oven to finally get up to temp, you’ll love these 550mm halogen lamps. Instead of wasting time heating up the air around your part, these lamps shoot shortwave infrared energy straight into the material. It’s fast. Really fast. And because you aren’t dealing with a giant box of hot air, you can save a ton of floor space. Power and Heat The 550mm length is a sweet spot. It gives you a much higher wattage ceiling than those short-tube heaters. But here’s the thing: more wattage means a lot of heat flux. Just a heads-up—make sure your wiring and power supply can handle that initial surge when you flip the switch. If you skimp there, you’re just asking for the lamps to burn out early. The Build We wrap the tungsten filaments in high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because these things go from cold to scorching in a heartbeat, and quartz can handle that thermal shock without cracking. Most of our units use R7s or SK15 connectors, so they usually slide right into your existing industrial frames without a fuss. And if you’re working with a tricky plastic or metal, we can use coated lamps. This tweaks the light spectrum so the heat sinks into the core of your material rather than just scorching the surface. The Trade-offs You’ll see these all over the place in automotive curing or PET blowing. The wide heating zone is great, but it’s not perfect. You’ll probably notice the heat dips a bit at the very ends of the tube. To fix that, we usually suggest overlapping your lamp arrays or using reflectors to bounce that energy back where it belongs. One last tip: these lamps put out a lot of heat, and not all of it goes into your workpiece. Your cooling fans are going to be working hard. If your airflow is too weak, the housing will overheat, and your filaments won’t last nearly as long as they should.
