Let’s talk about the 118mm Ruby Halogen Heater

If you’re working in a tight spot but need a massive amount of heat, fast, this is where the 118mm Ruby lamp comes in. We built this 220V, 400W setup specifically for those “no room to breathe” scenarios. The magic here is short-wave infrared. Instead of wasting time heating up the air around your part, the heat jumps straight into the workpiece. It’s immediate.

The power behind the glow

Packing 400W into a 118mm frame gives you some seriously concentrated heat. Because it runs at 220V, it hits operating temperature almost the second you flip the switch. We also use a halogen cycle inside. Without it, the tungsten filament would just evaporate and coat the inside of the glass, killing the lamp pretty quickly. This cycle keeps the glass clear and the heat steady for a lot longer.

Why the “Ruby” coating matters

You’ll notice the quartz tube has a distinct red tint. That’s not for looks. This coating filters the light to shift the energy into a spectrum that certain materials just soak up better. It makes the heat beam more focused. Plus, it’s a lot easier on the eyes. Clear quartz lamps can be blindingly bright and harsh; the ruby coating tones that down, making it safer for whoever is standing nearby.

Getting it installed (and a few warnings)

These usually slide right into standard R7s or similar linear sockets. It’s a simple swap. But a heads-up: make sure your sockets can actually handle a 400W load. They get hot. And here’s the thing about that ruby coating—it actually makes the glass surface hotter than a clear tube. If your machine’s frame is hugging the lamp too closely, you might find yourself warping metal or melting plastic. Give it some breathing room. We always suggest leaving a decent air gap or using a fan to keep the ends cool so the seals don’t blow out.
