
Getting Your PET Preforms Just Right with Halogen IR Lamps
If you’re in blow molding, you know the struggle. You need those PET preforms to hit that perfect softening point right before the stretch-blow phase. If they’re too cold, they won’t stretch. Too hot? You’ve got a mess. That’s where these halogen infrared lamps come in. They aren’t your average heaters. They use short-wave emitters to punch heat deep into the plastic, and they do it fast. Let’s talk power. We build these things to pack a lot of wattage into a tiny space. Usually, you’re looking at a 220V or 380V setup. The goal here is heat density. More wattage per millimeter means your production line keeps humming along without slowing down. But here’s the catch: you’ve got to get the voltage right. If you under-volt the tube, the plastic just won’t get hot enough to stretch. On the flip side, if you push too much voltage through, you’ll fry the filament in a matter of days. It’s a balancing act. The build quality. Inside, there’s a tungsten filament housed in high-purity quartz glass. We use quartz because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. It lets that short-wave IR radiation fly right through without soaking up the heat itself. As for the wiring, we stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because they just work. They’re drop-in replacements for most industrial machines. Plus, they create a tight connection, so you don’t have to worry about electrical arcing while the machine is shaking and vibrating. The real-world stuff. The best part is the control. Since you can zone the lamps, you can treat the neck of the bottle differently than the base. It gives you a lot more flexibility. Just a heads-up, though. These high-output tubes put off a lot of heat. I mean, a ton. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, that heat soak will start doing damage. It can warp your reflectors or even melt your wiring. You get incredible speed, but you’ve got to make sure your machine frame can handle the thermal load.
