
Getting Your Woodworking Heaters Right (Without the OEM Markup)
When you’re picking out infrared heaters for edge-banding or finishing furniture, it really comes down to two things: how much heat you’re hitting the wood with and the wavelength of that heat. We build our quartz lamps to be simple, drop-in replacements for the big-name international brands. The idea is pretty straightforward—you get the exact same thermal performance as the original gear, just without that “brand name” price tag that makes your eyes water. The Heat Factor Woodworking is all about speed. You need to cure adhesives or dry lacquers fast so you can keep the line moving. To make that happen, we use high-purity quartz glass that can take a beating from intense heat. By tweaking the tungsten filament and the coil pitch, we can dial in exactly how many watts go into every centimeter. Now, a higher watt-density means you can speed up your conveyor belt, which is great for productivity. But there’s a catch: it puts more stress on the ends of the lamp. Also, just a heads-up—make sure your power supply can handle that initial “cold-start” surge. Those high-wattage tubes drink a lot of power the second you flip the switch. Built to Last To keep these lamps from burning out too quickly, we use a halogen filling. It basically acts like a recycling system, pushing evaporated tungsten back onto the wire while it’s running. This is huge if you’re constantly cycling your machines on and off. As for the plugs, we stick to R7s or Sk15 bases. They’re the industry standard for a reason—they make it easy to swap a lamp out right there on the shop floor without a headache. A Few Things to Watch Out For These lamps put out a massive amount of IR energy. Because of that, your reflectors have to be spot on. Here’s the thing: if your reflectors are pitted or oxidized, you’re wasting heat. Instead of the energy hitting your workpiece, the lamp housing just soaks it all up. We’ve seen too many sockets fry themselves because the ventilation was choked. Do yourself a favor and keep those cooling fans clear of dust. At the end of the day, our lamps fit the same electrical footprint as the lead brands. You plug them in, set your timers, and your cure rate stays exactly where it needs to be. Simple.
