If you’re running a Giardina line, you know the struggle. It’s a balancing act. You want to hit that target temperature as fast as possible so you can keep the line moving, but you can’t risk scorching the grain. When it comes time to swap out your lamps, don’t just grab “something similar.” That’s a recipe for a headache. You need the wattage and voltage to be spot on, or your heating zones will be all over the place. Let’s talk specs for a second. We build our replacement lamps to fit the original Giardina footprints perfectly. Whether you’re dealing with a 230V or 400V tube, the voltage has to match your transformer output exactly. If it doesn’t? You’re looking at a lamp that burns out the second you flip the switch, or wood that just isn’t getting hot enough. High-wattage shortwave lamps are the secret here. They hit the wood with an intense burst of energy that sinks in fast. That’s what lets you crank up the conveyor speed without sacrificing quality. What’s actually inside the tube? We use heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because these things go through a lot of thermal shock when they cycle on and off. We also use a halogen cycle to keep the tungsten filament from evaporating and clouding up the glass. It keeps the lamp clear. It keeps the heat consistent. And it means the bulb lasts for thousands of hours before you have to worry about it again. Most of these use R7s or Sk15 connectors—they’re snug, which is exactly what you want to avoid any nasty arcing at the contact points. The reality of the install. Installing these is pretty straightforward. You pull the old one, slide the new one in, and wire it up. Simple. But here is a pro tip: these lamps pack a massive amount of heat into a tiny space. If your reflectors are dusty or pitted, you’re basically throwing money away. The heat just doesn’t bounce back into the wood. Do yourself a favor and give those reflectors a good clean every time you swap a lamp. Your new tube will last longer, and your line will run a lot smoother.
